Computer programs that use facial recognition software are often based off of the same generic algorithm. Algorithmic bias is when These programs fail to recognize people of color and people with strong ethnic features. Some of these features include dark skin, small eyes/eyelids.
Algorithmic Bias effects those that are not perceived by the social norm. When coders do not include enough of a certain demographic of people during their data collection, this group of people becomes algorithmically discriminated against and the programs do not work with their features. often times, the people that are algorithmically discriminated against are those that vary in facial features from that of W.A.s.p. individuals.
Algorithmic bias may not seem like a huge problem, but when law enforcement agencies use facial recognition software to catch criminals, people of color are often misidentifed due to the lack of diversirty in the software's database.
